Displaying and Printing the Map
Introduction
The Map Page is the heart of digdat; it displays the location of buried assets against a background of Ordnance Survey maps.
User Options
Down the left-hand side of the screen there are options for:
- Returning to the home page
- Entering the help pages
- Printing the map
- Returning to the search page
- Updating the map
- Clearing the text boxes
The boxes at the bottom of this panel can be used to add some specific, descriptive text to the map display. There are four boxes each of thirty characters. The text that is typed into these boxes will be displayed on the right-hand side of the map after the display is refreshed using the ‘Update map' button.
The map can be printed by using the ‘Print' button. The specific printer can then be selected from the dialogue box in exactly the same way as other Windows applications. In order to print the map and associated legend as it appears on the screen it will be necessary to use the dialogue box to set your print to landscape format.
Moving around the Map
The buttons along the bottom of the screen are used to pan around the map and to zoom in and out. It should be noted that, for Ordnance Survey copyright reasons, it is not possible to view an area greater than 500 metres square.
The Map Display
The map is displayed with a legend on the right-hand side. From the top this shows:
- A description of the data that is being displayed
- Any specific text added by the user in the boxes to the bottom left of the map
- The date at which the data was last updated
- A legend showing the types of asset displayed
- A notice from the relevant utility regarding their data
- The Ordnance Survey copyright notice
Changing the Password
Users are issued with a password when they register to use digdat. For security reasons the system will ask users to change this password the first time they use the service.
Subsequently users will be requested to change passwords at regular intervals to protect the system against unauthorised usage.
Users can also change their password whenever they wish and particularly if they suspect that anyone else has discovered the password.
In order to change the password the user should select the 'Change Password' option from the left-hand side of the Terms and Conditions page. This brings up a screen that will ask for the current password, and then for a new password that must be entered twice. Once OK is selected the new password will be active.
